The Legacy Learning Series

There's always something new to learn.

The Legacy Learning series have been developed to provide participants with a more technical perspective of how some of the complex shipboard systems operated and the effort for the crew to effectively run the ship.

The series will comprise of several individual classes led by knowledgeable Battleship volunteers.  Each class consists of a three-hour classroom session followed by an approximately 90-minute visit to several shipboard spaces associated with the class.

Each class begins at 9 am and runs through to 3 pm.  Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the lunch break.  Battleship admission is required for this class.

Legacy Series

Take Aim: Fire Control Systems on USS North Carolina

This class, led by long-time volunteer Alex Dydula, will explore the history and development of fire control for the Battleship's main and secondary batteries: the 16" and the 5" guns.

The ship used various systems and components to aim and shoot the guns onboard the battleship.  Discover the parts of various Gun Fire Systems that were used in WW2 to provide the batteries with an accurate firing solution.

Ever wonder how USS North Carolina aimed her guns?  How the Main 16"gun batteries and 5" secondary gun batteries worked? What were the systems and components that comprised the various gun firing arrangements on board?

Participants will explore and take a detailed look at the Fire Control System components such as the Mark 37 and Mark 38 Gun Fire Control Systems including the director, the system computers, PLOT, and the various inputs required to achieve a firing solution being sent to the gun.

This program requires climbing ladders, crossing high hatches, and going through tight/confined spaces.  This program is limited to ages 16 and older.
